Ilustrator dan penulis buku anak-anak Akiko Hayashi meninggal dunia pada 1 Juli 2026 di sebuah rumah sakit di Prefektur Nagano karena pneumonia.

Ia berusia 81 tahun.

Kabar duka ini dilaporkan oleh media Jepang The Mainichi pada Rabu (12 Juli 2026).

Hayashi dikenal luas sebagai ilustrator novel pertama Kiki's Delivery Service karya Eiko Kadono. Novel tersebut kemudian diadaptasi menjadi film animasi oleh Studio Ghibli pada tahun 1989.

Selain Kiki's Delivery Service, Hayashi juga mengilustrasikan buku Miki's First Errand karya Yoriko Tsutsui dan There's a Hippo in My Bath!

karya Kyoko Matsuoka.

Ia juga menulis buku bergambar sendiri, seperti Good Evening Mr. Moon dan Aki and the Fox.

Karier Hayashi dimulai pada tahun 1973 dengan buku bergambar Kamihihoki.

Selama berkarier, ia meraih berbagai penghargaan, termasuk Ehon Nippon Award ke-2 dan hadiah seni rupa dari Sankei Children's Book Publishing Culture Award.
